Notes from Ghost Town by Kate Ellison Review

They say first love never dies...

From critically acclaimed author Kate Ellison comes a heartbreaking mystery of mental illness, unspoken love, and murder. When sixteen-year-old artist Olivia Tithe is visited by the ghost of her first love, Lucas Stern, it’s only through scattered images and notes left behind that she can unravel the mystery of his death.

There’s a catch: Olivia has gone colorblind, and there’s a good chance she’s losing her mind completely—just like her mother did. How else to explain seeing (and falling in love all over again with) someone who isn’t really there?

With the murder trial looming just nine days away, Olivia must follow her heart to the truth, no matter how painful. It’s the only way she can save herself.

Kate Ellison’s Notes from Ghost Town takes readers into a heartbreaking ride through an unknown mental state of the mind. A mystery is lifted when the ghost of sixteen-year-old Olivia Tithe’s first love, Lucas Stern, who was brutally murdered, pays her a visit. A sea of speckled images of notes comes to her that may ultimately lead to the truth behind Lucas’ death. With Olivia seeing her old boyfriend and seemingly having a cross-dimensional relationship with him, it seems her mind is heading to the same fate as her mother’s—she may be losing it. The murder trial is just days away and Olivia hopes to reveal the truth about Lucas’ death.

The twists come early on in the story and continue to get tighter as it progresses. The clues are clearly there that leads to who did it and why but the possibilities seem endless that readers will feel unsure of what the end will hold. From the beginning, author Kate accomplishes to capture each and every scene that emotions essentially pour out and readers will not only feel it coming from Olivia, but importantly from Stern as well. The “gray space” is an imperative aspect of the book as it provided the perfect setting to further develop Olivia’s character. Not only we are presented with a wonderful coming-of-age story, the mystery that is stashed within was a well-designed addition. Getting to the bottom of the mystery to piece the puzzle of that fateful night is the pulling force that keeps readers engaged and coming back. Notes from Ghost Town is the perfect fit for a good mystery, spiced with paranormal and romance.

Kate Ellison spent a lot of time as a child, in Baltimore, pretending to be things she wasn't: a twin, a telekinetic, a benevolent witch with a box full of magical stones, a spy, a soccer player. She trained as an actor in Chicago and has walked across the entire country of Spain. She is a painter and jewelry-maker, and has at least one artist friend who really does keep his true name a secret from the world. He told her, but don't ask her to tell you—she's not gonna do it. Kate lives in Brooklyn, New York. The Butterfly Clues is her first novel.
